What's on in February
Events in Scarborough
In an otherwise quiet month you could take the time to visit the Scarborough Art Gallery to see 'Bathing Beauties'. This exhibition is an innovative and engaging look at the architecture of beach hut design. It evolved from the Bathing Beauties TM, a Hub touring exhibition which inspired 240 architects, artists and designers from 15 countries to compete for commissions to build their 21st century designs on the Lincolnshire coast. The best 100 models will be on show in the gallery. The exhibition runs from March the 13th to May the 9th.
Cinema
At The Hollywood Plaza at the moment, you can see 'Solomon Kane', a film about a 16th century anti-hero created by Robert E. Howard , who also created 'Conan the Barbarian'. In this action-packed story, starring James Purefoy, Soloman Kane fights against evil in an epic journey of redemption. Also showing is 'Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief', in which the schoolboy hero is confronted by the gods of his greek history texts and, like Orpheus, has to venture into the very depths of hell itself, in this story to save not only his mother but also the whole human race.
Meanwhile, at the Futurist, you can see ‘Astro Boy’, a film based on the manga comic created by Osamu Tezuka. A thrilling tale of a true hero, Astro Boy is an all new, feature film of action, adventure, humour and art and brought to life on the big screen in breathtaking CGI animation. And for the romantic types there is 'Valentine's Day' a film starring Jessica Alba and Julia Roberts which follows the intertwining storylines of a group of Los Angelinos as they find their way through romance over the course of one Valentine's Day.

Theatre
At the Stephen Joseph Theatre to the 6th of March you can see 'And a Nightingale Sang', in which the Stotts, an eccentric Geordie family, wage their personal battles against the terrifying backdrop of World War II. Amidst the air raid sirens and fears of poison gas, Mam makes Spam sandwiches, Dad pounds on the piano, Grandpa mourns his dead whippet, whilst daughters Joyce and Helen meet the joys and heartbreaks of first love. Filled with the music of the 1940s, this bittersweet comedy is an affectionate and moving picture of the survival of everyday life in turbulent times. C P Taylor's plays give a voice to the miners, shipbuilders and dockers of the North East home. He has a unique ability to present momentous historical events through the drama of ordinary lives.
From the 8th to the 13th of March there is a new production, written by and starring Jack Shepherd, called 'In Lambeth'. This portrays a meeting between the visionary William Blake and the revolutionary Thomas Paine.
The third offering of the month runs from the 16th to the 20th and it is a Northern Broadsides production of 'Medea'. Featuring one of the most powerful female roles in the history of drama, Medea is an intense story fuelled by passion, hatred and deadly rage. Heroic yet deadly, sympathetic yet appalling Medea's barbaric actions will stir your emotions as you find yourself irresistibly drawn into the nightmare world of this spectacularly vengeful woman.
Also at the SJT you can watch some of the best films on release. The films showing this month are 'Nine' , 'The Informant', and 'Harry Brown'.
