MOTOR TOURS FROM SCARBOROUGH

The following tours are suggested to assist motorists to plan visits to the various beauty spots and places of historical interest in the district around Scarborough. Tours should be used in conjunction with a map of the district.

Tour No 1 *

The Wolds and Sledmere
42 miles approx.

Leave by A64. At Staxton (7 miles) turn left on B1249 through Foxholes to roundabout then turn right for Sledmere. Leaving Sledmere take unclassified road to Weaverthorpe. Turn left over the wold to Sherburn. Cross A64 on unclassified road to Brompton. Turn right on A170 for return.

Tour No 2

Robin Hoods Bay and Whitby
50 miles approx.

Leave by A165 to Cloughton. Fork right at traffic island for Ravenscar. Retrace road 2 miles and turn right to rejoin A171. Turn right and continue 7 miles. Turn right at signpost for Robin Hood's Bay. Leave by B1447 for Hawsker and Whitby. Return via main road, A171.

Tour No 3

Pickering, Goathland Moors and Whitby
58 miles approx.

Leave by A170 to Ayton, Brompton, Thornton Dale and Pickering. Leave Pickering by A169 to Lockton, Saltersgate, Sleights, Ruswarp, Whitby (includes descent of Devil's Hairpin at Saltersgate and Blue Bank into Sleights and passing Fylingdales Early Warning Station after Saltersgate. A diversion can be made to Goathland, a delightful moorland Village, follow sign to left after Ellerbeck). Leave Whitby (A171) to Hawsker, Flask Inn, Falcon Inn, Cloughton and Scarborough.

Tour No 4

Rosedale, Danby Moor, Esk Valley
76 miles approx.

Leave by A170 to Ayton, Pickering and Wrelton. Fork right at Wrelton to Crompton, Hartoft and Rosedale and then over the moors to Ralph Cross, Castleton and Danby. In Danby turn left at crossroads and proceed to main Guisborough -Whitby road (A171). Turn right at A171 to Whitby and Scarborough.

Tour No 5

Castle Howard, Byland Abbey and Coxwold
80 miles approx.

Leave by A170 to Snainton. Turn left on B1258 through Yedingham to York-Scarborough road (A64) and turn right. proceed on A64 for 14 miles (approx.) via Malton bypass and then turn left for Kirkham Priory. Return to A64 and proceed via Welburn to Castle Howard and Slingsby. Slingsby (B1257) to Hovingham, Oswaldkirk, Ampleforth College, Wass and Byland Abbey. Visit Coxwold and return to Wass. Proceed to Wass Bank and then to main Thirsk- Helmsley road (A170). Turn right on A170 & return via Helmsley, Kirkbymoorside & Pickering to Scarborough.

Tour No 6

Helmsley, Rievaulx Abbey, Bilsdale
102 miles approx.

Leave by A170 to Ayton, Pickering, Kirkbymoorside and Helmsley. Leave Helmsley to Rievaulx Abbey (B1257) through Bilsdale to Chop Gate and Stokesley. Stokesley (A173) to Guisborough. Guisborough (A171) to Whitby and Scarborough.

Tour No 7

Ripon, Fountains Abbey and York
125 miles approx.

Leave by A170 to Ayton, Pickering, Kirkbymoorside, Helmsley, Sutton Bank and Thirsk. Thirsk (A161) to Ripon, Ripon to Studley Royal and Fountains Abbey. Return to Ripon. Ripon (B6265 to Boroughbridge. Boroughbridge (B6265 and A59) to York. York to Scarborough.

 

Note: * = Parts of trails are considered not suitable for motor coaches, but sections of adjoining trails could be combined.

A64 Westborough, Falsgrave Road, Seamer Road bypass, Malton and York.

A165 (Northwards) Northway, Columbus Ravine, Burniston Road to Burniston, Cloughton and Whitby.

A165 (Southwards) Valley Bridge, Ramshill Road, Filey Road to Filey and Bridlington.

A171 Westborough, Falsgrave Road, Scalby Road to Scalby, Cloughton and Whitby.

A170 Westborough, Falsgrave Road, Stepney Road to East Ayton, Snainton and Pickering.
